I am a busy stay at home mom with 4 children under 8. I used to do medical sales and pharmaceutical sales, and had my own business on the side (being home with kids all the time is definitely the most challenging thing I've ever done).
I love discovering great recipes and cooking techniques. Someday I plan to do more sharing of my own great recipe collection, but I don't know how I would fit that in right now.
I do a lot of the typical things moms do: clean all the time, cook, read with kids, occasional outings, volunteering, music, etc.. I stay sane by trading childcare with friends (that way I get a couple of 3 hour blocks per week to myself for desk work or errands or a little reading). I absolutely love to read and I also adore playing and listening to classical guitar.
I find that the arts bring me a lot of joy (music, visual, literary, culinary). I also find joy in the beauty that is in the world and nature and in the many unique and good people who I am fortunate to know.
I have compassion for the many less fortunate or suffering in the world, and wish I could give much more to charity... I would prefer to give all my extra money to good causes, but I guess when it comes to giving, my husband's more rational head prevails which means we carefully budget, and save, and give a portion of our overall income to charitable causes (around 12% of our income before taxes and other expenses). My favorite causes are The Smile Train, Empower Playgrounds, organizations which focus on research and helping people who suffer from disease (Cancer, heart disease, ALS, etc.), and my church (LDS, especially Perpetual Education fund which helps poor but motivated people increase their earnings through loans for additional education which they pay back, and Humanitarian Aid wich benefits recipients regardless of religious affiliation).
I love the PTA Reflections program which encourages school age children to share their artistic talents. I'm a co-chair at our elementary school.
I love the MOMS club (Moms Offering Moms Support, an international organization with local chapters all over the place!). I am a board member of my local chapter and I think it's a great organization which helps moms make friends and do activities that enrich themselves and their children.
Health is important to me and I love making delicious whole grain bread, as well as nourishing food for my baby. I love to exercise regularly, but have not been on track for nearly a year since I had my last baby. A recurring shoulder injury also holds me back from being as active as I wold like.
I am most recognized for my culinary talents making great breads (whole wheat and artisan) and for making delicious roasted vegetables which often grace our table.
My extended family admires or criticizes me for the time I spend taking cooking classes. I have really enjoyed learning more about various ethnic cooking techniqes and recipes (Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Italian, French, Persian). I would love to learn more ethnic varieties: especially Indian, also Vietnamese, Afghan, and more.
We love eating out. Our favorite higher priced restaurant is Tiburon (located in Sandy, Utah). Our favorite family restaurant is Zuppa's (I believe a local chain). We really enjoy fine food and feel it's worth it to have older cars and to trim our budget in other areas so that we can enjoy some nice restaurant meals several times a year.
When it comes to health and cooking, my philosophy is one of high nutrition, whole grains, and moderation. But then when I make a really good dinner recipe, I don't worry too much about calories or fat since we generally eat a lot of whole grains and fruits and vegetables. I don't usually like low fat or low calorie desserts (they are usually yucky... if you are going to bother making dessert, it should be really good... just eat a reasonable portion size).
