Born and raised in Honolulu, some of my favorite childhood memories are of shopping in Chinatown and at humble (yet world-famous!) Tamashiro Market.
Moving to the mainland and being introduced to fusion and ethnic food left me wanting to say, duh. These cuisines were the norm in Hawaii. I am grateful, though, for trying Indian and Mexican food once moving here. Now those are two of my favorite cuisines that, at least while I was growing up in Honolulu, were not common.
This few past years have been especially tough for us, financially speaking. But out of frugality we've become even more creative and adept at cooking delicious meals on a verrry tight budget. I'm eating more vegetables now than I have in my life! And pork shoulder cooked in the crock pot all day is one of the easiest and yummiest things to prepare for dinner.
Seafood! Fish, crab, prawns, oysters, mussels, eel...the list goes on and on.
The same could be said for cheese. My favorite is cambozola, that yummy blend of camembert and gorgonzola that makes my mouth water just thinking about it.
I'm definitely a carnivore. Rib eye is my favorite cut of beef. Haven't had it in a while, as we're on more of a pork shoulder budget these days. :-)
Coffee and tea are favorite beverages.
As for types of food, I think my favorites are Thai, Chinese and Indian. Spicy, please! But I'll jump at the chance to eat at a good Japanese, Mexican or Italian restaurant. When I get homesick I head to Ono Hawaiian BBQ for a Loco Moco plate!
