    Reviewed Wet Burritos

"These were very good, and I was able to make 5 huge burritos using 10" tortillas! I did make a couple of additions - I added a 4-oz. can of chopped green chiles to the beans and a small can of sliced black olives and some chopped fresh cilantro to the "inside" of the burritos. Sauce was great. I served with (optional) sour cream and chopped green o..."

Reviewed Bacon Lettuce &Tomato Layered Salad

"This stuff is addictive! I freeze fresh basil in olive oil in ice cube trays, transfer to a bag, and always have fresh when I want it! My tomatoes were too ripe, so I drained 28 ounces of canned diced in a wire strainer and used those. I think that is what eliminated the "wateriness" that someone else complained about. Otherwise, made as written an..."

    Reviewed Yummy Baked Potato Skins

"I can;t believe I forgot to rate these! Made for boyfriend and his friends for last Superbowl. Every one was gone in minutes! Made just as written (I will only rate a recipe I make as written, otherwise, it;s just MY take on it, right?) Anyway, instead of discarding the scooped-out pulp, I froze in it in a Foodsaver bag and make mashed fo..."

Reviewed Kittencal's Best Brown Sugar Turkey Brine

"Made this brine for our 18.5 pound Thanksgiving turkey this year. My, my! Hands down, the best turkey I've ever cooked! All agreed the extra flavor from brown sugar, pepper, Worchestershire and garlic made a MUCH better brine than just salt and sugar. Brined for 24 hours in a 2-1/2 gallon bucket in the fridge, only change was that I used only 1-1/2..."

    Reviewed Port Wine Mushroom Sauce

"Excellent! Had over pan-seared pork chops (thin cut) and couscous. Easy and elegant. Next time I will add a bit more port, as I love the tart flavor."

    About Me

I'm an RN, currently on leave since my 23-year old son passed away last year.
I love to cook, hate to bake, like to can when I can obtain large amounts of things.

I have always thought of myself as a fair homestyle cook, nothing fancy or "new age". I lived in LA for 5 years and picked up some pretty good recipes for Mexican food, which my family here in Boston love when we have a Mexican Feast. When my second son was born, I did work for a caterer for a year, cooking for the (then) governor of MA political events, and one time for a party given by Frank Purdue at the Boston Aquarium!
I guess I'd have to say that I'm probably famous (among those who KNOW of me) for my "Ma's Minestrone"

I have MANY interests and hobbies! I seem to "rotate" through them regularly, start getting a craving to do something again if it's been a while. I knit, do counted cross-stitch, crewel, embroidery, needlepoint, scrapbooking, beading, quilting. I also do genealogy - have been working on my family tree for 35 years! 15 generations on several lines and a research trip to Scotland are my crowning achievements! I own an old house, so have learned alot about do-it-yourself remodeling. My assortment of powertools is mind-boggling.(and I know how to use them all!) I refinish orphaned furniture from yard sales and thrift stores and have caned many a chair seat! I also do alot of reading, almost always novels - medical thrillers, mysteries, and my favorite: historical novels. Love Stephen King.

    Favorite Foods

    I love anything "savory"
Much prefer filling, satisfying comfort-type foods.
If I had to choose ONE food to have as the only thing to eat on a deserted island, it would be PIZZA! Philly Cheesesteak or cheeseburger, to be specific!
I will usually pass on dessert, except if it's ice cream!

FYI, any recipes I post will have been made by me at some point in time. I see no point in posting something I haven't determined to be 5 stars in my book!   My pet peeve, here on 'Zaar, is seeing a recipe posted without having been made by the poster! I've even seen recipes that the poster later amended saying "I finally tried this, it's horrible, but I can't delete it!"
