I have loved to cook ever since I invented chocolate peanut butter cupcakes when I was about eight. They came out great but of course I had no idea what I'd done to make them. With my girl scout troupe I went to cooking classes at the Power & Light company (they were promoting the "all electric kitchen." After that I made breakfast for my family every Sunday morning, and practiced making fancy Sunday dinners like coc a vin.
When I met my now husband (a long time ago), he worried that my cooking would demean me (he'd dated a raging feminist for a quite a while). I had to convince him that my love of cooking made me no less of a person -- after 26 years I think he's finally accepted that. He still thanks me for cooking for him, which I truly appreciate.
I love inventing recipes, but the only problem is that I never remember exactly how I did it (shades of the childhood cupcakes). My sons said they were going to install a video camera in the kitchen so they'd be able to re-create my "masterpieces" after I'm gone.
I used to watch cooking shows on PBS every Saturday while doing my ironing, but I don't like the commercial cooking shows. I do enjoy the Splendid Table on NPR and I love Googling a few ingredients and finding some terrific recipes. That's how I found the terrific Thai Beef Salad on this site. I had some leftover grilled steak and amazingly had all the rest of the ingredients available (including fish sauce and kefir leaves).
Well, that's me. I have a few other blog spots, so I'm not sure how often I'll add to this site, but who knows. (I'm currently experimenting with my first gluten free cake, having recently become sensitive to gluten -- it just came out of the oven and smells heavenly -- hope it's good!)
