I love to cook and eat!! My favourite types of food are hearty, simple, and family-oriented; I really enjoy cooking for family and friends and watching them enjoy what I've made. Although I love to bake, my husband and I are diabetic, so I'm trying to tone down on baking and eating sweets, and it's not easy... but I'm looking at it as an adventure ~ a way of exploring a new kind of eating.
My favourite cookbooks are "Looneyspoons" and "Crazyplates", by Janet and Greta Podleski (OUTSTANDING recipes -- healthy and delicious!!). I also like Weight Watchers ~ their website has some great recipes. Favourite tv chefs include Michael Smith, Laura Calder, Rachael Ray, and Ina Garten.
My Mom's cooking, really. Most of my recipes try to follow hers as much as possible. My favourites include the following:
*french onion soup
*quiche, crustless or not
*creamy vegetable soups and chowders
*potatos!!! mashed, baked, souped-up, au gratin, casseroles, potato salad (cold as well as hot German style)...
*bbq ANYTHING -- steak, chicken, ribs, fish, sausages, burgers... bring it on.
*roast turkey with all the trimmings
*grilled vegetables of any kind
*cheese, cheese, can't get enough cheese
*anything with caramel
*chocolate mint brownie cookies
*peach or strawberry-rhubarb pies
*Mum's Christmas cake
*fresh fruit any time of the year
My tastes are mainly European, but I like to dabble with Mexican and Asian cooking too.
