    About Me

I live in my hometown in southeastern South Dakota, near the Missouri River.  My husband passed away in 1998 and my significant other and I been a couple since a week after our first date in 1999. He farms so I always have farm fresh eggs and home-grown beef. I am managing editor of the weekly newspaper in a small town ten miles from where I live. I also keep busy with my 13 year old son's activities and helping at the farm. It's been a challenge to learn to cook in smaller quantities since both of my daughters are grown and on their own. I enjoying cooking, baking, collecting cookbooks, crocheting, reading, hunting, fishing and bowling. My favorite cookbooks are church cookbooks. I have a church cookbook that I received from an aunt as a gift 25 years ago that has become "well-worn" and is my "go-to" cookbook along with a couple of other cookbooks that I frequently use. I learned to cook and bake from both of my grandmothers--one was German, the other Czech and learned "farm-style" cooking from them. I also was in 4-H for 12 years and did a lot of baking and also participated in Special Foods contests. I usually try to check 'Zaar every day and see what new recipes and cookbooks have been posted.

    Favorite Foods

My favorite dish to cook depends on the time of the year. In the summer it is anything I can put on the grill as we are on the go with baseball and the farm. In the winter I love to bake. We also eat alot of game as our family hunts and fishes so am always on the look-out for new recipes for wild goose, pheasant and venison as well as new ways to prepare catfish and walleye.
My favorite foods are my dad's beef heart stew--he always made enough for a threshing crew but it is so good and my mom's German kuchen. My mom bakes at least twice a week, sometimes more, and always sends something home with us or will drop off some of whatever she baked so we have a nice surprise waiting when we get home!
